-Detached Characters - DC's-Also known as ‘NPC’s’ or ‘non-player characters’, a detached character is a character usually created to add life or event to a storyline, but isn’t a permanent character. DC’s commonly do not live long in the storyline and are ‘killed off’ by another character, or they are there as someone who gives special items or knowledge to a weary traveler. Characters like these; although they seem unimportant, in many cases are vital to any good adventure or setting. They can be anyone, and without them, any storyline can dissolve into a puddle of monotony and boredom. DC’s give to a storyline what may be lacking with other players. For instance, you play with a group of people, all whose characters are that of vampires and demons. What is a world with only two races and no other race or creature to interact? Detached characters are important at times, and all players should understand the creation and use of a DC. Below is a list of facts about detached characters. 1-Detached characters cannot kill regular characters, but they can kill each other. 2-Detached characters do not require a character profile. 3-They can even be played superior to other characters, having a multitude of powers and abilities to nearly kill a regular character as long as they do not kill. 4-Although DC’s cannot kill regular characters, they can inflict valid wounds and all other events they cause to unfold in any storyline must be acknowledged and played out accordingly by all involved. This includes kidnapping, theft of a powerful weapon or object, sexual encounters, etc. As stated, the only invalid action that a DC cannot make is character death. 5-DC’s must be made public, meaning that any DC character created, it must be known by all players involved that it is a detached character.
