Lyssna’s Story
Lyssna was born 14 years before the opening of the Marakine portal that would allow many to enter Earth’s domain without hindrance. Her mother was from the Northern area of what would be known to modern earth as Sweden. She was a diviner that could tell if someone was lying. It was said that the father of Lyssna was a great warrior that had saved the village her mother Fretta resided. He claimed to be of Greek origin. Fretta, before her death, never denied such, and many wondered if it was true.
The village Elders questioned the origin of Lyssna’s father because he seemed to blend in and speak the language of the region with perfection. They had also seen him fight and knew he could do amazing things on the battlefield. When in war council, Lyssna’s father showed himself to be a great tactician, and his ideas worked on the battlefield even though most of the weapons the village had were primitive at best: low grade swords, farming tools, slingshots, etc. When asked his name, he only gave the word Medomai. Though they did not know the word’s meaning, it seemed to fit the soldier, who was leading a battalion of men in place of their commanding officer who had been killed in battle. Medomai means ‘to think’ and if they only knew, how true it was.
After the enemy was defeated, Medomai and Fretta shared a bed. It was believed they would be together for the rest of their lives. But that was not to be so. After a week of rest, what was left of the battalion headed back to Greece to their families, Medomai telling Fretta of his lack there of and that if she ever needed him, that she should travel to Greece and find him. He also led her to believe, and she could not find falsity with this, that he would know if she were searching for him.
Almost 38 weeks to the day after Medomai left, Fretta gave birth to Lyssna. Though she didn’t die in childbirth it severely weakened her, even in her ability. Lyssna’s hair was as bright red as the passion Fretta felt for Medomai and her eyes as deep blue as the Aegean Sea. Many a letter was sent to the south, but none met the hands of the father.
Fretta, knowing her life had been shortened by this birth, took to caring for and training her daughter. At a young age, around 6 years, Lyssna had proven that she gained her mother’s power when a man came to the village and had intended harm to it. Lyssna rushed to the Chieftain of the village and whispered in his ear what her mind had heard. The man barely spoke the language which put an interesting twist to the negotiations. Needless to say, they fell apart.
Unfortunately, this failed attempt at a trade agreement had fatal results. A week later, in the dead of night, the village was slaughtered, all except the girl who had enough sway on the Chieftain to end the talks. Snatched up and taken to Russia, the girl was placed in the Tsar’s palace and made a slave to him. Once it was determined that she could read the minds of anyone whose eyes she looked into and she could understand their thoughts as if they were in her own language, the Tsar became greedy and overprotective.
From age 7 to age 15, Lyssna slept on furs at the base of the Tsar’s bed, chained like an animal… a pet. She was never beaten or starved for food, but she was punished by having to do menial labor if she failed to comply with the Tsar’s wishes. It was only when the Tsar took his retreats and left Lyssna in the care of his personal guards and servants did she have a break. It was also when she learned to use a knife and a sword. She is not the greatest warrior, for they did not want her able to best them, but they trained her enough to keep herself and the Tsar alive should there be a time when they were not around.
It was while the Tsar was on one of his famous retreats that Lyssna was able to escape. Intuitive she was, having listened to the words of the servants that spoke of underground escape tunnels. Crafty she was to find a time when the guards were small in number so she could slip out and into these secret tunnels. Her escape was a difficult one, the tunnels lasted for days. Having to make due on a loaf of bread and a small canteen of water, Lyssna spent several days below before she was able to find a way above ground. Not once did the guards think to look below, but they should have.
Lyssna knew her life was in danger as she lived within the Tsar's home. Too many visitors in the night. Too many that would attempt to make her mentally theirs. The cold skin and pale complexion, even for places they claim to be from, weighed heavily on her mind. Their lure to her, to her scent, as she was made to be at the side of the Tsar while in their presence, made her more than ready to leave. She would attempt to stay out of their way, this much she made a promise to herself.
Lyssna has spent the last 4 years attempting to find her way to her father. She hopes that he has not fallen in battle and she will have at least one parent to complete her life with. She has learned to fend for herself, using her ability to gain only enough coin to have clothing, food, a place to rest, and, if possible, to buy a ride with someone who was heading toward the Greek states. She has learned through her travels and meeting of people, to make her own clothing out of materials. She has been able to purchase a short sword and a dirk to fit her build, for she is fairly tall (5’10”) and thin (159 lbs).
Now as she enters the northern Greek states, Lyssna has found there is something of a change in the people she is dealing with: her coloring: fair skin, red hair and green eyes. She has not found many a person here that looks like her, and the sun, it warms her skin and makes it turn pink if she doesn’t wear her long scabbard like covering of white linen. There are fewer people here that are willing to help her, even if she is willing to pay with coin. Though, she has found that men are more than willing if she would give them a night of bliss, which is something she refuses.
There has been a trail of blood that has led down the path of Greek Estates as she searches for a man who doesn’t seem to exist. Blood of men that thought they knew what was best for her and thought they could possess her. But Lyssna, deep within, refuses to ever be a slave as she was for the Tsar. As for the Tsar, you might ask, he has begun to fail miserably in his politics, which is something that Lyssna cares nothing about for her former ‘master’ and would say he deserves, as she looks to find a place she can call home in a land that is not as loving as the father her mother spoke of before her death.
**Any creature less powerful than a Urandrum must do the following to stop their minds from being read if eye contact is made: 1) Notice she is reading their thoughts; 2) Make a conscious effort to stop her – If creature has Mind Reading, then it is an automatic success to stop her; If not, then the creature’s initial thoughts are read, but they must break eye contact to break the reading.
Creator’s/Player’s Note to others: Understand that Lyssna, unless she has been put to the task, noticeably, or speaks the thoughts or answers the thoughts will be subtle when she is using this natural ability. It is also not something she can readily ‘turn off’. Lyssna can only read minds, she cannot control them. Also understand at the same time, her mind is very difficult to read. There are ways to do so, so one must be creative if they cross her path to be successful.
