Sophia Welch is of
royal blood, daughter of Offa, King of Mercia, who still lives today. Upon the
opening of the Marakai, King Offa, also known as ‘King of All England”, sent
Sophia away to live deep in the forests of Wales. Little did he know that it is
where the Gateway to the Marakian Dimension can often be found. It was his
intension to keep her as far away from the Marakai, as possible. She has not
seen her father since, but he sent along with her an entourage of guards,
servants and other various people to cater to her needs. Sophia, however, never
liked the attention. She never got used to the pedestal and had come to befriend
her servants, rather than treating them the way her father meant for them to be
treated. Sophia is kind and caring of all living things, in fact, she is often
too kind for her own good. She would assume help a demon that wants to kill her,
than leave it to die if it’s wounded.
She stays in Wales, having bought a castle there for herself. The people who
owned it were more than happy to give it up. They had seen far more than they
wanted, or could understand, of those coming to and from the Gateway. And Sophia
herself has seen quite a bit, demons and other strange creatures traveling
through the lands, but she keeps her distance, knowing she is unsafe. The castle
is a nice size, but not too large to notice if one were not looking for it.
Sophia stays there for much of her time, painting and teaching the servants how
to read and write. She absolutely adores children, though she has none of her
own. She has never been married, or even lay with a man in all of her
twenty-five years of life. She was to marry a Prince, but all future plans were
altered when the demons came. This, she was glad for because she did not love
him. But she would have married him, nonetheless. She has always wanted to love
and be loved, but she wanted it to be real. She wanted to have children, and she
still does, despite feeling in her heart that this is not a world one should
ever bring a child into.
Sophia is soft and graceful in everything she does. Hardly does she ever get
angry, show envy of others, or recognize the meaning of hatred. Of course, she
is not ‘perfect’, though some have dubbed her as so—she has her moments. Though
even in those times, she seems to present herself with kindness and sincerity
above all else. Sophia is no less than helpless against other beings so
powerful. Never was she even taught to use a dagger to protect herself. She was
always surrounded by guards that were her protection, and now in such ailing
times, she still would prefer never to touch a weapon of any kind. But Sophia is
strong-willed and she does not fear death at all. She would never stoop to
lowering herself by begging for her life if she were put in the situation. She
would simply accept it, but that isn’t to say she wouldn’t try to fight back.
She values life, even her own, and will do what she can without becoming someone
she is not, to keep it.
One thing above all else about Sophia is that she has a yearning to bring peace
between the worlds empires. When the Marakai opened, she noticed right off how
the world turned itself upside-down, how men who were once friends, became
enemies and how easily the world’s population let themselves become stricken by
this plague of darkness. Sophia is a diplomat of sorts, with no fear when it
comes to walking right into enemy kingdoms with hopeful intensions to talk them
out of their rage. But what may be worse for Sophia, is that she has it in mind
to do this very thing with the Marakian Empire. It is the single most
significant reason for the decision to stay in Wales, because she is so close to
the Gateway and anticipates the day she will walk through it herself. Never
would she put her men in harm’s way by letting them follow, and when she does
make that dangerous trip, she will go it alone. Can one human woman change the
fate of the world? Probably not, but in Sophia’s mind, to try is better than
never to try at all.
