'Our ancestors, in their wisdom, considered that all women,
because of their innate weakness, should be under the control of guardians.'
It had been
almost a year since the death of her father, Augusta Merici. She had been told
he die bravely during one of the battles with the Marakai. After hearing of his
death, her mother could not bear to live without her loving husband and one
night, in a deep state of depression, took a dagger to her heart, leaving
Isabella alone.
She had been taught her well by her mother. Isabella had been schooled in the
Roman language, spinning and weaving of wool for their clothes, and of music.
She loved to sit and play the lute. She could discuss poetry and enjoyed
listening to political speeches.
Her home was a modest one located just outside of Rome, with rooms built around
a courtyard where she would tend a small garden of flowers and herbs.
Her dark beauty of black hair and chocolate brown eyes made her porcelain skin
seem transparent and as she moved about the city many heads turned but she
didn’t give them second thoughts.
With no guardian to control her, Isabella roamed the streets during the day,
something she had enjoyed as a child, listening to the speeches and wandering
about the market looking over the wares of merchants from different countries.
Merchants that knew her would offer her food, wine and whatever else she might
need to live, which she welcomed and thanked them politely.
Since the arrival of the Maraki, she watched and listened hoping to find the
person that might have been responsible for her father’s death. Being only a
human, with no powers or skills, she wasn’t sure what she could do if that
information came her way. Only time would tell.
